Home Remedy Head Lice Treatments, All Natural and at Home

Home remedy head lice: There are plenty of old wives tales about methods to create a home remedy for head lice - so how do you know which are the best? Not everyone is comfortable using a store-bought product to cure headlice due to the possibility of coming into contact with unnatural chemicals. Home remedies are becoming popular again as the movement towards organic products grow. This article will delve into some of the better known and more regularly used home remedies for this frustrating and sometimes embarassing problem.

Onion Juice for Head Lice

The theory behind this remedy is that the sulfur in the onion extract kills off the lice. Remember that as with virtually all head lice remedies, you need to repeat this treatment over the course of 3 or 4 days to make sure you kill all the lice and their eggs. The larvae will not usually die from the first treatment - left untreated, they will hatch and you will have a head full of lice again.

Other alternatives that work on a similar principle are vinegar and water (mixed in a ratio of three parts water to one part vinegar) or crushed garlic mixed with lemon juice.

Hair Straighteners As a Home Remedy?

Yes. This is a theory that is yet to be proven, but is based on the idea that the heat from the hair straightener will kill off the lice. Again, however, this will not kill the lice eggs so you may have to couple this treatment with a thorough looking over with tweezers to make it an effective home remedy head lice. See the comb and tweezers remedy below for more information.

What About Camphor Extract?

Another option for curing head lice at home is to mix camphor with a natural oil - tea tree oil is a popular choice - and apply it to your hair every night before bed for several days until the lice and eggs are dead. This method has not been proven but is believed to work on a similar principle to the mayonnaise remedy described below.

The Good Old Comb and Tweezers

While this is a time-consuming remedy, it can be very effective. However is is also very difficult to do this on yourself - you can use this method on your child or have someone else perform it on you. Comb the hair thoroughlyand remove any extra lice with the tweezers. Repeat the process for several days to ensure no lice have been missed.

Mayonnaise

This is another popular home remedy. The idea is that because of the thickness and consistency of the mayonnaise, it chokes off the lice. You may also want to think about wearing a shower cap - it keeps the mayonnaise sealed in and helps you avoid a big mess on your pillow at night. This can also be done with natural oils or vaseline. There's debate about whether or not this method of lice removal really works to kill the lice, but some people find success with it because the lice are often washed out when you wash out the mayonnaise from the hair. However, you may have the problem of eggs clinging on and the infestation returning.
